Sister city medical exchange celebrates 18th year Atrium Health Navicent and the Mercer University School of Medicine are hosting nine visitors from Kurobe City Hospital for the 18th year of a unique medical exchange rooted in a 45-year sister city partnership between Macon-Bibb County and Kurobe, Japan. Each year since 2003 — with the exception of a two-year pause during the COVID-19 pandemic — resident physicians, nurses and other health care providers from Kurobe City Hospital have visited Atrium Health Navicent and Mercer University, and physicians and nurses from Atrium Health Navicent and Mercer University have traveled to Kurobe City Hospital to share their knowledge and learn from their international counterparts.

Accounting for about 30 percent of all new female cancers each year, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among American women.

Having a plan can benefit your health Although central Georgia didn’t experience severe impacts from Hurricane Ian, now is a good time for individuals to assess whether they are medically prepared if another unpredictable weather event comes our way. “While the impacts of Hurricane Ian are fresh in our minds, it’s time to stock up on an emergency medical kit and make preparations,” said Atrium Health Navicent Chief Clinical Officer Sandy Duke. “If the unexpected happens, having a plan and preparations in place could have serious benefits for your health.” Atrium Health Navicent physicians suggest the following tips: Get Ready Now Make sure to have the following items ready in your emergency medical kit in preparation of a hurricane or other severe weather event: • Medications for at least one week (two if possible) and copies of prescriptions • Extra eyeglasses/contact lenses • Medical equipment/assistive technology and backup batteries • Specialty foods for those on restricted diets • First aid kit • Medical insurance cards • A copy of your medical records (Either printed out or electronic records copied to a USB drive). You can also access your patient records online and through the MyAtriumHealth app at the Apple Store or on Google Play.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among American men Atrium Health Navicent invites the community to recognize Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September by learning more about risk factors, screenings and treatment options for the disease, which is the second leading cause of cancer death for men in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetimes and 1 in 41 men will die from the disease.
