Residency Program Overview

Our 12-month PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency program has been accredited by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) since 1995. Our residency program is an organized, directed, postgraduate training program that centers on the development of the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and leadership needed to yield a well-rounded clinical pharmacist, that can pursue a specialty PGY-2 residency or work in a variety of settings.

Residency Program Purpose

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build upon a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 pharmacy residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy, and pursue advanced education and training opportunities.

Program Structure

The resident must be a highly motivated, proactive pharmacist who desires to obtain and excel in advanced education and training, leading to an enhanced level of professional practice of pharmaceutical care.

In order to provide training in all aspects of contemporary pharmacy practice, the resident will complete organized learning experiences incorporating the following areas:

  • Patient Care
  • Practice Advancement
  • Leadership
  • Teaching and Education
  • Management of Medical Emergencies

These competency areas will be taught via the following required learning experiences:

Required Learning Experiences (month-long in length)

Upon successful completion of the program, trainees are awarded an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited residency certificate.

Staffing Commitment

The pharmacy residency program follows ASHP's Duty Hour Requirements. To ensure our pharmacy residency program provides training in all aspects of acute care pharmacy management, the Pharmacy Practice learning experience will include a staffing commitment every other weekend as well as one evening per week. The resident is allotted one “off-duty” day for each weekend that is worked.

Residency Major Project

During the residency year, the resident is required to complete a major project directed at enhancing personal and professional growth while still benefiting the pharmacy department through innovative changes in the way pharmacy is practiced. The project will be presented at the Southeastern Residency Conference and a manuscript will be prepared prior to completion of the residency program.

Teaching Certificate (optional)

The option to pursue a teaching certificate will be made available to the resident via a partnership with Mercer University College of Pharmacy. Mercer's practice-based teaching certificate program is based on ASHP Residency Standards and ACCP Guidelines. A primary goal of the program is developing the resident through practice and to teach the skills required to function in both an experiential setting where teaching is involved or in an academic environment.

The decision to pursue a teaching certificate will be optional and must be conveyed to the Residency Program Director prior to the start of the residency year. The residents will follow Mercer's clinical track program as it focuses more on precepting in an experiential setting versus an academic or classroom environment.

Benefits

The resident annual stipend is approximately $60,000. Full employee benefits are available including accrued paid time off as well as medical, dental, and life insurance. Educational travel support is provided for the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, Southeastern Residency Conference, and other offerings as approved by the program director. Residents are provided a dedicated office space containing individual desk space, laptop computers with office docking capabilities to dual monitors, phones, storage space, and a color printer.
