State trauma system continues to develop despite election setback

Someone being picked up by the life flight helicopterVital developments in the state trauma system continue despite voters"Ÿ rejection of state funding of trauma centers. A regional communication system that will link ambulances to trauma hospitals will be established in Forsyth and for the region served by the Level I Trauma Center at MCCG. Dennis Ashley, Professor and Director of Trauma and Critical Care, is chair of the state trauma commission.

After a one-time $58.9 million startup grant from the state in 2008, funding for the trauma system decreased to $10.5 million as a proposed amendment to provide revenue from license fees was defeated last November and "super speeder" fines for high speed traffic violations failed to generate expected funding.
