Marion C. Hatcher, wife of Milford B. Hatcher, M.D., founding chair of the Department of Surgery, died at home February 4 after a long illness. She was 89.
After Dr Hatcher's own death in 1991 Mrs Hatcher continued her association with the Department with the annual Milford Hatcher lecture and a scholarship in her name at MUSM. A Columbus, Ga., native, she grew up in Jacksonville, Fla., and later graduated from the University of Alabama. She and Dr Hatcher settled in Macon after their marriage in 1942 and his service in World War II. They were founding members of the Highland Hills Baptist Church where she remained active until her illness. She was known as an avid gardener and bridge player. Mrs Hatcher is survived by her two children, three grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. Both Dr. and Mrs. Hatcher's legacies extend to the hundreds of physicians and surgeons who have been educated and trained here in Macon.
