Pediatric Residency Program

Curriculum
  • We have recently expanded to accept eight interns per year; total 24 residents
  • Referral Base: Covers 30 counties in the Southern portion of the state
  • Rotation schedule is based on 13 four-week rotations per academic year
  • Residents choose from three tracks in the middle of their intern year: Rural, General Pediatrics, and Subspecialty/Fellowship track.

Teaching Conferences

Curriculum

Noon Conferences

  • 1-3 times per week
  • Curriculum is based on an 18-month curriculum weighted according to pediatric board content specifications
  • Lectures are based on Pediatric in Review articles, and are given by faculty
  • Monthly Jeopardy are given to encourage retention
  • Quarterly quizzes are given

Grand Rounds

  • Occurs every Thursday. Attended by residents, attendings, private physicians, medical students, nurses, and anyone else interested in the topic for the week
  • Each 3rd year resident presents once at Grand Rounds

Journal Club

  • Approximately monthly and is led by residents
  • The resident reviews medical literate and presents an article with subsequent group discussion

Resident Administrative Meeting

  • Occurs once a month and includes only residents and directed by the chief residents.
  • “Closed door” where resident opinions remain anonymous from attendings and administrators

Simulation Lab

  • Occurs monthly
  • State of the art Sim-Lab prepares residents for CPR, procedures, and leading code simulations

Weekly Review

  • Occurs every Friday
  • Case presentation by a resident, with discussion facilitated by an attending. Similar to the traditional “Morning Report.”
  • PGY-3 residents present an Ethical topic that allows for discussion

Board Review Curriculum

  • Each intern is assigned a Board review mentor for all three years
  • Will have semi-annual meetings to discuss learning style, strengths and weaknesses, and study plan throughout the three years
  • In third year, an individualized learning plan (including life events) will be created to optimize studying
  • After graduation, the residents attend (in person or virtually) a board review course
