Our Pediatric Residency Program

Pediatric Residents

The Pediatric Residency Program at the Medical Center, Atrium Health Navicent/Mercer University School of Medicine is a small program with a huge referral base. We accept six interns per year and have a complement of 18 residents. The residents know each other well and are directly involved in all aspects of program administration. Our referral base consists of over 30 counties in the Southern portion of the state. Because we service such a large underserved patient population, we see an amazing amount of pathology. Our residents make the diagnosis in a large proportion of our patients, and only then are patients referred to other facilities if necessary. The unique demographics of our referral base and our small size, affords our residents an exceptional opportunity to learn general pediatrics on a first hand basis.

Our residents enjoy one-on-one educational opportunities with the general pediatric staff as well as the subspecialists. The faculty knows all the residents by name. Our residents are comfortable calling the general pediatric faculty and subspecialists alike. We have no fellows so all patient care and procedures are performed by the residents with attending supervision. Subspecialty experience is both in block rotations as well as longitudinal and provides residents with a generalist role model for the care of chronically ill children with subspecialty needs.

Educational Opportunities

The Pediatric Residency Program is the primary focus of our faculty. A full schedule of teaching conferences is provided on an on-going basis. A weekly case conference, Pediatric Grand Rounds and teaching rounds provide solid clinical teaching, which is enhanced by the didactic core conference series.

We have established our rotation schedule based on 13 four-week rotations per academic year. A thirteen week rotation schedule gives residents more opportunity to experience all aspects of pediatric education.
