In observance of Birth Defects Awareness Month, physicians at Atrium Health Navicent encourage expectant mothers and women of child-bearing age to become educated about steps they can take to prevent and detect birth defects. Birth defects affect 1 in every 33 babies born in the United States each year and are the leading cause of infant deaths, accounting for 20 percent of all infant deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Health system seeks to raise awareness in observance of Glaucoma Awareness Month Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide and although about 3 million Americans have glaucoma, half don’t know they have it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This January, during Glaucoma Awareness Month, physicians at Atrium Health Navicent Ophthalmology Macon urge the community to educate themselves about resources available to maintain eye health and to treat glaucoma.

Health system honored for achievement in reducing risk of medical errors and improving patient safety and medical outcomes The Partnership for Health and Accountability (PHA) has presented four of its prestigious Patient Safety and Quality Awards to Atrium Health Navicent. These annual awards recognize Georgia health care organizations for achievement in reducing the risk of medical errors and improving patient safety and medical outcomes. “These projects are examples of how Atrium Health Navicent teammates are living our culture commitments to ‘innovate to better the now and create the future,’ while earning trust and working ‘as one team to make great things happen’ in our continued ‘drive for excellence’,” said Atrium Health Navicent President and CEO Delvecchio Finley. “We’d like to thank the Partnership for Health and Accountability for recognizing our teammates’ work to improve patient safety and provide high quality care.” Monroe County Hospital, an Atrium Health Navicent Partner, won second place in the Critical Access Hospitals category for its project “Safer Together: Maximizing Patient Safety Through Variance Reporting.” The project increased and destigmatized the reporting of incidents and near-miss events — or variances — which is shown to improve patient care.

Heather Walker is Atrium Health Navicent’s first female chief information officer NonProfit PRO, a national bi-monthly print magazine and website providing nonprofit news, has honored Atrium Health Navicent Chief Information Officer and Vice President Heather Walker with its 2021 Technology Professional of the Year award. “Heather Walker’s leadership during the pandemic has been vital in expanding our telehealth offerings and ensuring our teammates have the tools they need to provide excellent health and customer service,” said Atrium Health Navicent President and CEO Delvecchio Finley. “Congratulations to Heather for receiving this much-deserved recognition!” Walker became the first female chief information officer for Atrium Health Navicent in July 2020 and was faced with many technological challenges brought on by the pandemic. In addition to helping medical workers address remote work needs, she spearheaded a communications system that sent wellness updates to patients’ families who were unable to visit.
