Risk factors for breast cancer
A risk factor is anything that increases your chance of developing breast cancer. Some people have one risk factor, while others may have several – but having risk factors doesn’t mean you’ll get breast cancer. It simply means you may benefit from earlier, more frequent or more specialized screening.
Some risk factors for breast cancer include:
- Having a family history of breast cancer
- Carrying certain genetic mutations linked to breast cancer, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2
- Having a personal history of breast cancer and/or certain non-cancerous breast conditions, like atypical hyperplasia
- Having dense breast tissue, which can make cancer harder to detect with a regular mammogram
Other factors – like your pregnancy history or exposure to hormones – can also influence your risk.
Our team of experts will help you understand your personal risk profile and guide you in making informed decisions about your breast health.
High-risk breast services
You can schedule an appointment at our clinic for a personalized breast cancer risk assessment. Our goal is to help you understand your risk, create a customized screening plan, and provide extra monitoring if you’re at higher risk.
Depending on your needs, your plan may include services from the Breast Cancer Center, such as:
- Early and increased screening: If your risk is higher than average, we may recommend starting screenings at a younger age and having them more often.
- Advanced imaging: In addition to mammogram, we may recommend advanced tools like breast MRI, ultrasound, molecular breast imaging (MBI), or contrast-enhanced mammography for the best chance of early detection.
- Genetic testing and counseling: You may be offered a virtual consultation with certified genetic counselors from Atrium Health Levine Cancer in Charlotte, NC. If you have a personal or family history of cancer, they can provide genetic testing and guidance to help identify your risk for breast and other hereditary cancers.
In addition to high-risk screening, we also care for patients with benign (non-cancerous) breast conditions and those who are being monitored after breast cancer treatment.
