Walk with a Doc Baldwin Chapter to Host Inaugural Walk

Take a step toward better health and join Baldwin County’s inaugural Walk with a Doc at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 15. The walk meets at the Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin walking track, located at 821 N. Cobb St. in Milledgeville. All you need is your walking shoes!

Part of a worldwide program, Walk with a Doc is a free, recurring, doctor-led walking group. Atrium Health Navicent currently partners to offer Walk with a Doc sessions in Bibb County, but this is the first time the program has expanded to Baldwin County. The sessions allow participants to safely walk and learn about current health topics. Walks begin with a brief discussion led by a physician and then participants enjoy a healthy walk and conversation.

Although this is the first Walk with a Doc initiative in Milledgeville, in February Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin and the city of Milledgeville partnered for a Mayor’s Health & Wellness Walk in recognition of American Heart Month.

“Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin is proud to partner with Walk with a Doc and the Baldwin County Board of Commissioners to offer the Milledgeville community another opportunity to participate in healthy exercise while learning about how to improve their health,” said Luis Fonseca, interim Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin CEO and Atrium Health

Navicent president of hospitals and clinics. “Through the combined power of physical activity, health education and social connection, this is a great prescription for a healthier life.”

Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Based on his success, this program has grown and expanded to over 500 communities all around the world.

Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center, in collaboration with community partners, started the Walk with a Doc program in Macon in 2019. The Macon chapter meets on the first Saturday of every month at Amerson River Park. Walkers sign in at 7:45 a.m. and meet with the doctor at 8 a.m. during April-September. For October-March, walkers sign in at 8:45 a.m. and meet with the doctor at 9 a.m.
