Take a Walk with a Doc in Milledgeville this Summer
Lace up your sneakers and take a step toward better health this summer! Join Baldwin County’s Walk with a Doc wellness group at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18. This free walk is open to the community and meets every third Saturday at the Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin walking track, located at 821 N. Cobb St. in Milledgeville. Light refreshments will be served. In the event of rain, the walk will be canceled.
Part of a worldwide program, Walk with a Doc is a free, recurring, doctor-led walking group. Atrium Health Navicent partnered to bring Walk with a Doc to Baldwin County in 2023. The sessions allow participants to safely walk and learn about current health topics. Walks begin with a brief discussion led by a physician and then participants enjoy a healthy walk and conversation.
“Walking is so important for your heart health, and this group setting also allows you to meet and connect with others in your community. It’s a great opportunity to learn from the doctor leading the walk, ask questions, have fun and commit to living a healthier life through regular exercise. We hope you’ll grab your walking shoes and join the May walk, or one of the other upcoming sessions,” said Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin Chief Operating Officer Thomas Goss.
Walk with a Doc will also be held on June 15, July 20 and Aug. 17.
Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Based on his success, this program has grown and expanded to over 500 communities around the world. Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center, in collaboration with community partners, started the Walk with a Doc program in Macon in 2019. The Macon chapter meets on the first Saturday of every month at Amerson River Park. Walkers sign in at 7:45 a.m. and meet with the doctor at 8 a.m. during April-September. For October-March, walkers sign in at 8:45 a.m. and meet with the doctor at 9 a.m. Walkers who attend Walk with a Doc in Macon and Milledgeville in May and June will be invited to participate in a national raffle to win a free pair of sneakers.
