Sorority, Health System Partner to Raise Awareness of Diabetes 

MACON, GA (Friday, November 7, 2014) – Medical Center of Peach County, Atrium Health Navicent, Diabetes Healthways at the Medical Center, Navicent Health and the Fort Valley chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. (AKA) invite central Georgians to “Step Out – Walk to Stop Diabetes.”

The event will be held on Saturday, November 15 at Fort Valley State University's Pettigrew Center. The 5K event will begin at 7:30 a.m. and will be followed by a diabetes workshop from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

The guest speaker for the diabetes workshop will be Ron Manalo, M.D. a family practice resident at Mercer University. Dr. Manalo will discuss diabetes, its causes and treatment.

“Diabetes is one of the major health problems in our region, and is most prevalent in Peach and Bibb Counties. Our hope is that this event will bring people out for a fun and active morning, while also increasing their awareness of diabetes, contributing factors and appropriate management,” said Roz McMillan, Assistant Vice President of Population Health and Community Health Education for Atrium Health Navicent.
