Navicent Health Baldwin Generates $131 Million for Local and State Economy

Health System Supports Approximately 11 Percent of Jobs in Baldwin County

In 2017, Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin generated $131,292,403 in revenue for the local and state economy, according to a 2019 report by the Georgia Hospital Association, the state's largest hospital trade association. During the same time period, Atrium Health Navicent provided $6,430,682 in uncompensated care while sustaining approximately 1,700 full-time jobs in Baldwin County. The hospital directly employs approximately 500 full time employees. Applying a U.S. Department of Commerce multiplier to the number of jobs, GHA estimates the hospital indirectly created 1,204 jobs within Baldwin County, or approximately 11 percent of the county's jobs, in 2017.

Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin also had direct expenditures of more than $56 million in 2017. The total economic impact of those expenditures was $131,292,403.00 when combined with an economic multiplier developed by the United States Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis. This output multiplier considers the "ripple" effect of direct hospital expenditures on other sectors of the economy, such as medical supplies, durable medical equipment and pharmaceuticals. Economic multipliers are used to model the resulting impact of a change in one industry on the "circular flow" of spending within an economy as a whole.

"Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin has supported the health and wellness needs of the residents of Baldwin County and the surrounding communities for over 60 years, and we also play an integral role in guarding and enhancing our region's economic health. We are thankful for those who trust us for their care, and we will continue to work to ensure area residents have access to the highest quality, affordable and equitable healthcare services available, close to home," said Todd Dixon, CEO of Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin.

According to Atrium Health Navicent CEO Dr. Ninfa M. Saunders, FACHE, every community needs nearby access to a strong, vibrant healthcare system that will not only meet the healthcare needs of its residents, but also attract other industries and businesses to the area.

"Preserving access to healthcare is extremely important. A healthy community depends on the strength and support of its local hospital. Hospitals like Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin are the primary guardians of health in a community, but also a major economic engine in this area that is directly responsible for the creation of jobs and the creation of a vibrant community," said Dr. Saunders.

Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin looks forward to continuing to expand its impact on the region as it continues to add healthcare providers and health services for the area.

According to GHA's 2019 report, the Atrium Health Navicent system as a whole generated $1,704,281,279 in revenue for the local and state economy, while providing $91,960,845 in uncompensated care and sustaining more than 17,700 full-time jobs throughout central Georgia and the state.
