Defining Pediatric Surgery

Pediatric surgery refers to any surgery performed on a child. Contrary to what one might think, it does not involve a pediatrician. These doctors tend to deal with basic issues faced by children, but when surgery is needed, a specialized surgeon is often called in to do the work. Pediatric surgery is a specific area of surgery that can quite different from general surgery in some cases. Because of the nature of the patients and the different conditions children suffer from, surgeons in this field often require special training that goes beyond what a typical surgeon might receive.

There are many types of surgeries these doctors perform. They have to be versatile and willing to do more than just consider what the patient needs in that moment. They also have to be conscious of developmental issues and the long-term effects of their actions. Here are some things pediatric surgeons can do for children.

Our pediatric surgery team here at Atrium Health Navicent Beverly Knight Olson Children's Hospital, cares for children from newborns through late adolescence. We choose to make pediatric care the core of our medical practice, and the unique nature of medical and surgical care of children is learned from advanced training and experience in practice.
