After a thorough assessment, we determine the services most appropriate for your child's individual condition. In addition to receiving quality pediatric orthopaedic care, we work closely with all specialists so that each child receives well-rounded healthcare. Non-surgical orthopaedic services are provided in the child-friendly environment and services include:
When surgery is necessary, you can count on our experience. Our orthopaedic surgeon and the surgical team at The Children's Hospital at Atrium Health Navicent are well qualified to perform invasive and minimally invasive orthopaedic procedures.
Recovery from many orthopedic conditions may be improved, or achieved more quickly, by following a rehabilitation program. Rehabilitation services vary from a basic exercise plan implemented at home to a supervised program using advanced hospital facilities. Our orthopaedic physician will work a therapy team to achieve your child's maximum wellness. Rehabilitation services your child may receive include Physical Therapy. Physical Therapists are licensed therapists who use exercise, aquatic therapy and a variety of therapeutic techniques to help your child regain motion, rebuild strength and increase endurance. Occupational Therapists may also work your child. These therapists are professionals trained to help your child rebuild or develop fine motor and self-care skills.

Miranda's mom, Lori McGuire, " In July Miranda was in a bathing suit and she was standing, facing me and I asked her why she was standing that way. And after looking at her having her turn and straighten up, we realized something just wasn't right. I took her to our pediatrician, here in Cochran, and the doctor definitely agreed that something was off. So she sent us to Dr Lincoln, the orthopedic in Macon. He was extremely wonderful through the whole process but he also suggested that we have surgery. "
Eric Lincoln, DO Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery, "When I first met Miranda, she was a thirteen-year-old female, we diagnosed her with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Her x-rays revealed that she had a curvature of approximately 60 degrees in the lower part of the spin. Typically we consider operating when the curvature is greater than 45 to 50 degrees in that area. Mazor is a robotics guidance system for allowing the surgeon to place hardware in the spin. It is based on a CT scan that is done pre-operatively. The surgeon will then plan where all of the hardware is going to be placed in the spin. X-rays are obtained in the operating room to match the CT scan to the X-ray and then the robot, the robotics trajectory of the screw and the surgeon hand drills the screw placement."
William Dasher, MD, Adolescent Orthopedic Surgery, " If Miranda had not chosen to have surgery her curve would likely have been progressive throughout her adulthood. And would have potentially caused problems, not only with back pain and injuries in her deformity size but if it got bad enough she could have problems with her heart and lungs as well. Before Mazor robotics was available, screws were placed using an x-ray machine and what we call a free-hand technique which involves the surgeon determining how the level screw should enter the spin. With Mazor robotics system we are able to pre-operatively plan the exact size and trajectory of the screw so that it takes human error out of the equation. The Mazor robotics system has been shown to have close to 99% accuracy placement of screws. "
Miranda's mom, Lori McGuire, "The staff at the hospital were all amazed at how quickly she stood and how well she did. She stood, and her recovery has been wonderful through it all. This has been a very god process. This has actually gone a lot easier than we ever dreamed it would go. Her quality of life has actually improved because her demeanor has changed. She has actually become more confidant in herself because she's so straight now."
