Are you concerned about a family history of cancer? Navicent Health provides genetic counseling services to patients and their families. The goal of cancer genetic counseling is to identify and educate individuals who may be at an increased risk of cancer due to certain genetic factors. Identifying those who are at an increased risk can promote awareness, early detection, and cancer prevention.
A genetic counseling session involves a one-on-one meeting with a trained professional. The professional will discuss family history and provide a personalized risk assessment for hereditary cancer. Individuals who have a higher chance of having a hereditary cancer include, but are not limited to, those who have had cancer at a young age, those with multiple family members with the same cancer or related cancers (e.g. breast and ovarian), or those who have had multiple cancer diagnoses. As part of the session, the professional also educates the patient on the role of genetics in cancer, genetic testing options, and screening recommendations based on the family history. If desired, testing will be facilitated. Both before and after testing, the significance of genetic testing results will be discussed.
