Atrium Health Navicent Resident Wins Trauma Research Competition

Dr. Brett Howard to Represent State in November

MACON, GA (Tuesday, October 21, 2014) – Atrium Health Navicent congratulates Dr. Brett Howard, a third year resident who recently won first place in the American College of Surgeons Georgia Committee on Trauma Resident Research competition.

Dr. Howard's research project was entitled, “hTEE Measured SVC Index: A useful Tool for Predicting Fluid Responsiveness in the Trauma Patient.” The appropriate fluid balance of the critically ill patient in the ICU is important for improved outcomes.  This research will help physicians better incorporate the use of ultrasound into the management of these complex patients. As first place winner from Georgia, Dr. Howard will represent the state in the American College of Surgeons Southeast Region competition in November.

The contest was hosted by Georgia Regents University (GRU) in Augusta, Ga. Residents from across the state competed in the contest, including those from Atlanta Medical Center, Emory University Hospital, GRU and Morehouse College.
