The Atrium Health Navicent Infectious Disease Fellowship program at Mercer University School of Medicine is a new program. Its roots, however, arise from an Atrium Health Navicent Infectious Disease Division that was established in 1985 and that has served the middle Georgia medical community continuously since then. Our ID Fellows will become the focal point of our educational activities and be instrumental in running the clinical services. They will participate in ongoing research related to the HIV epidemic that continues to plague our community as well as other areas of general infectious diseases. The Mercer University School of Medicine Atrium Health Navicent Infectious Disease Fellowship at the Medical Center Navicent Health maintains an academic environment for development of clinical & research skills, emphasizing activities that will prepare our trainees for careers in clinical practice or academic medicine.
Currently, trainees participate in a two-year program. During this time our fellows will spend approximately 14 months on the Atrium Health Navicent Infectious Disease inpatient consult service, 4 months on the Atrium Health Navicent Infectious Disease outpatient service, 1 month on a microbiology/pathology rotation, and the remainder of time dedicated to their research and educational endeavors, while maintaining a half day clinic for the entirety. All trainees are expected to participate in a mentored clinical and/or laboratory research project during their fellowship.
The Medical Center Navicent Health provides a broad range of infectious disease problems, utilized for the clinical training of our infectious diseases fellows. Fellows also participate in outpatient clinics including the local Ryan White HIV clinic, the obstetrics high risk clinic, the pediatric infectious disease clinic, the Mercer Medicine travel clinic, as well as the Mercer Medicine Atrium Health Navicent Infectious Disease clinic.
